John Hartley

Pathways for Mutual Respect
Executive Director
John Hartley is founder and executive director of Pathways for Mutual Respect. He is also a research fellow at the Yale Center for Faith and Culture. Hartley works as a scholar-diplomat to understand and strategically fill gaps in relations between Muslims and Christians and the actors that shape their worlds. He holds a B.A. in international relations (honors and special recognition) from UC Davis; an M.A. in Iranian history (distinction) from the University of Isfahan, Iran; and two master's degrees from Yale University, where he is also a Ph.D. candidate. Hartley's analytical interests are in religion, culture and politics, religio-secular relations, conservative interfaith relations, globalization, secularization, and social theory. His work has engaged these dynamics in Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Pakistan, Nigeria, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.
